Movies are super fun & both me and my wife Shwetha are huge movie buffs. We tend to catch up on at least one watchable movie per week & this week was very special since we had very own Kannada movie Tagaru release in Pune. We were lucky to get tickets for 5:40 pm show which gave us one reason to excuse ourselves out for dinner. We decided to go to “The Blue Plate”, Aundh for dinner since both of us were in mood to gorge on some pasta & I had heard a lot of good things about this place by many peeps on food forums like PEO.
A Little Bit About The Blue Plate:
The Blue Plate is the brain child of Pratik who managed the delicious Cafe De Custard near MIT, Kothrud. While their previous outlet focused mainly on the dessert custards & some fresh nibbles like sandwiches etc., “The Blue Plate” is a completely refreshing take on the cafe concept focusing on very limited offerings like pastas, flat bread, baguette sandwiches & a few starters. They have both indoor seating which is air conditioned both in lower, the upper decks & the standard outdoor section where one can opt to sit for on a cool winter evening. While one would wonder why exactly the name “The Blue Plate” let me quote this from their menu,
“The Blue Plate” is an old term used in American Diners. These diners were used to serve their ‘Today’s Special’ items in blue colored plate. Hence the term “Blue Plate Specials” was created. We at “The Blue Plate” believe that every dish on the menu is special hence the name.
Nice ideology if you ask me 😉
The Look & Feel:
The ambiance is very welcoming & warm with very comfortable seating in all the sections. The interiors are done very aesthetically & I really like the fact that they did not overdo the blue theme.
It was Sunday evening by around 9:30 pm when we reached here & we had to wait around 15 mins for getting a table. They have a proper system in place to note down the name & the guy who was handling things was very courteous to all the people walking in there. We were very hungry by the time we reached this place but at the same time I did not want to over order things since there were tons of carbs on the platter. So we ordered judiciously one by one & we had,
Cheese Garlic Bread – This quirky version of cheese garlic bread came with a super fluffy bread with cuts in between stuffed with garlic dressing & stringy mozzarella cheese. The overall bite was very balanced in terms of flavor of garlic & cheese. The bread was served warm which is how I would exactly like this beauty to be served. Although we ordered this as appetizer I am sure this would go wonderfully well with the pastas they serve.
Piri Piri Chicken Flat Bread – The base is a flat bread which is crispy and chewy at the same time giving you that bready bite. It is topped with chunks of chicken doused in piri piri sauce & onions with balsamic reduction. While the piri piri flavors were spot on, it was very hard for me to decipher that balsamic kicks. I guess the naive me still looks over for those glossy black streaks of balsamic when it comes to balsamic reduction.
Alfredo Penne Pasta Veg – This was a little downer for us. The penne & the veggies were all cooked perfectly for me but the pièce de résistance – alfredo sauce, was over seasoned with tons of oregano herbs & was a notch higher with salt content. I believe given how busy a Sunday evening would be for them & how good all the other components of this dish were, I can gladly place the downsides apart & enjoy this dish. Another humble suggestion would be include a piece of plain toasted sliced baguette rubbed with little bit of garlic & butter along with the pasta. This really helps to scoop up all the saucy goodness off our plates & that for me, completes my pasta experience!
Hot Chocolate – They make a good one – period! This was luscious goodness of all that good chocolate with the right amount of sweetness topped with light whipped cream. The taste & texture was almost very close to liquid chocolate ganache. While I was very apprehensive about the fact that this would be very heavy, it was very hard decision for both of us to share one & walk out without ordering another (I doubt that would ever happen again!).
My Final Verdict:
The Blue Plate serves some really refreshing cafe style food. Everything here was made fresh so a wait of 10 -15 mins per order was very much acceptable given they were running a full house on a late Sunday evening. The costing was also very much pocket friendly for me with the whole dinner including the dessert costing me a little less than Rs.650. Overall they serve good food with a smile & a fantastic ambiance where in you can spend some quality time with your loved one’s*.
Do give this place a try next time you are in Aundh.
Must Have’s: Hot chocolate & flat breads.
Can Avoid: Honestly I have been here just once. Their menu is short & simple with something for everyone visiting their place. So I do think I can point out anything specific in this section.
Address:No.3E, Seasons Road, Sahil Park, Sanewadi, Aundh, Goodwill Society, Sanewadi, Aundh, Pune, Maharashtra 411007
Contact Number:97640 24615
Operational Timings: I believe there are operational from 12 pm to 11 pm on all days EXCEPT Mondays
* The place gets quite congested when it is running a full house, so in case you are looking out for something private then may be you need to re-consider your options.
